MYOD: PHASE ONE

Why Make Your Own Device (MYOD)?

Make Your Own Device is an affordable and adaptable approach to providing a relevant, inclusive and meaningful high school music education to all students. By combining the benefits of many modern music education philosophies, including the Maker Movement, Project Based Learning (PBL), experiential learning, technology and cross-curricular integration, students of all backgrounds can gain a meaningful music education and more. Learn more here.

We believe that all students should have access to a quality and relevant music education, and the economic efficiency of this project means that we come closer to reaching this goal.

The cost of a single MYOD MIDI controller is approx. $40, while the cost of the average metallophone is $269 (read more here), and cheaper guitars cost around $100 when bought in bulk (example here).

What is MYOD?

A series of projects allowing high schools to integrate technology into music education in an affordable and meaningful way. MYOD is a two phase program involving the design, creation and implementation of MIDI controllers as a means of experiencing music. The cross-curricular link with Technology means that funding for the creation of the MIDI controllers can be sourced from STEM budgets. Not only does the creation component of the project mean that more funding is available, students experience the benefits of the maker movement (read more here).

This project is designed to be adapted to each individual school context - all resources provided are encouraged to be altered according to the needs and capabilities of the students and the school. As a guide, the two phases are as follows:

Phase One: A long term project completed in the mandatory Technology course where students design and create their own MIDI controllers.

Phase Two: A series of lessons and projects centred around diverse musical experiences through students' MIDI controllers, culminating in a public showcase of student performances of compositions.

The project includes:

Phase One:

  • Curriculum Links to the mandatory Technology course in NSW.

  • A video series on the making of the MIDI controller (to be used as either teacher or student resources).

  • Equipment list with pricing.

  • Suggestions for extensions of the project.

Phase Two:

  • A suggested unit of work for the mandatory music subject while students are completing Phase One.

  • A unit of work based around the use of students' MIDI controllers.

  • An iBook designed to help students connect their MIDI controller to the chosen DAW and demonstrate basic capabilities of the DAW (can be used as a student or teacher resource).
